Week Twelve

Today we looked at the last point of the semseter - inviting questions.

We looked at ways to invite questions during and after a presentation.

Look at the two videos below. Note how he invites questions from the audience.

Also note that in the bad video he:
  • puts his hands in his pockets
  • sways
  • doesn't pause between information
  • leaves quickly
  • doesn't have an introduction
  • seems unpracticed (umm, err)
  • speaks faster and faster as the presentation goes on

Week Ten Videos

Today we looked at using verbal techniques to make speeches more interesting.

Compare the two videos below.

In the first video he has the following physical traits:
  • rubs his head
  • puts his hands in his pockets
  • touches the table
  • looks at the paper
  • doesn't make eye contact

In the second video, as well as correcting the physical traits, he also:
  • uses rhetorical questions to open and end the speech
  • uses an anecdote to support his opinion
Anecdotes are really useful to support your opinion when it isn't based on fact. They show why you think that way.

Week Nine Videos

This week we looked at how gestures effect how we connect with the audience.

First look at the good video. Notice the gestures he uses:
  • He points to himself when giving his opinion
  • He gestures to the audience when relating a topic
  • He uses his hands to display a quantity
  • He uses his fingers to count the three points he makes
  • He hits his palm with his fist to show emotion

Now look at the second video. Notice how the things he does makes him seem defensive and cold.
  • He crosses his arms.
  • He speaks quietly.
  • He doesn't make eye contact.
  • He leans to one side.
  • He puts his hands on the table.
  • He doesn't have any enthusiasm.

Week Eight

Today we looked at presenting data in speeches. We compared the following two videos.

Note in the second video, he:
  • Uses visual aids to represent the data
  • Says numbers slowly and clearly
  • Pauses between sets of information
  • Sometimes repeats important numbers

Lesson Seven Videos

Today we continued looking at presenting processes.

Again, look for these points in the video:
  • emphasise and repeat key points and words
  • check audience understanding

Lesson 5 Videos

Today we looked at presenting processes.  We know that you should:
  • emphasise and repeat key points and words
  • check audience understanding

Lesson 4

Compare the two videos below. See how it is easier to understand the presentation when the object is shown. When we introduce things the audience is unfamiliar with, a picture or the object itself makes it more interesting and easy to understand.
